D2Xs DSLR Camera

Strengths: Easy to use. Quality photographs, The feel of quality when you hold this camera.

Weakness: Un able to have auto preview viewfinder. Price.

I own the D2Xs Nikon Camera and the D-200. I've had the D2 neaqrlly a year, and 1.5 years on the D-200. I've been able to take some beauty photographs with each of these cameras. The addition of preview view finder on the back of the camera would be a great mod.

The camera is very easy to use. You can use it like a point and shoot, if you are in a hurry.

Weakness: a bit heavy - a minor point

This amazing SLR is like two professional cameras in one. It produces beautiful 12.4MP images with several file options: RAW, RAW + Jpeg, Jpeg & Tiff. It features a large buffer that allows continuous shooting at 5 fps in the 12MP mode. Nikon adds the "High Speed Crop Mode" which uses a portion of the CMOS sensor for a 6.8MP image. In this mode, you can shoot at 8 fps, and the lens magnification jumps from the standard 1.5x to 2x. When in the High Speed Crop mode, the image in the viewfinder shows the cropped area as shaded. This visually reminds you that you are in the cropped mode, and also allows you to see what's being cut out of your shot.

The Lithium-Ion battery is rated for about 3800 shots. While everyone should assume this is an inflated, non-real world figure, one should note that this camera's main competitor (Canon's 16MP 1Ds Mark II) had a battery that Canon rates around 1200 shots. While I have not tracked my usage, I know that it's up there! This is a smart battery that gives plenty of feedback regarding the charge remaining.

While the body is a bit heavy (40.6oz.), Nikon has made it a joy to hold. The design is very ergodynamic. What's more, the D2Xs has a second shutter release used when holding the camera in portrait orientation. The secondary shutter release is lockable to prevent accidental exposures. The main & secondary control wheels are also replicated making control of the camera in portrait orientation a snap. There's even an option to have the camera automatically flip portrait images in the LCD during image playback.

The LCD is a brilliant 2.5" high resolution screen, with a removable protective cover included. The auto white balance does an excellent job. There are several presets as well. The D2Xs can bracket white balance and/or exposure in user-defined increments. The start-up time is the shortest of the pro-digital SLRs.

All things considered, with a street price around $4250.00, the Nikon D2Xs is an excellent investment!

THE GOOD: Top-notch image quality; professional body; very low noise even at high ISOs. THE BAD: Expensive; large and heavy; no full-frame sensor. THE BOTTOM LINE: Nikons flagship dSLR ranks among the best 35mm-format cameras currently made, but some pros may take umbrage with its less-than-full-frame sensor.
